Hello everyone, my name is Liao Nengyan. I moved from Shanghai to Kunshan in ninth grade, and then went to Taiwan in eleventh grade. For me, my environment has never been fixed—customs, culture, and many aspects of life have constantly changed. At the same time, these ever-changing experiences have made my life incredibly rich and dynamic.

At school, I am often the person in charge of various initiatives. I have served as the president of an economics club and the captain of a business competition team. I have also led a round-island cycling team and even guided a group across the desert. In addition, I have taken on roles such as a planner for psychological counseling projects, as well as a playwright and actor in a drama festival. Switching between these different roles has not only enriched my school life, but also strengthened my sense of responsibility through continuous challenges.

In my personal life, I see myself as someone who truly loves and enjoys life. Beyond pursuing academic excellence, I believe it is more important to find my own purpose and realize my personal value. For me, this sense of purpose comes from budai xi (traditional glove puppetry), an ancient cultural art form. Since childhood, I have been fascinated by its vivid and dynamic performances on television. As I grew older and developed a deeper understanding of traditional craftsmanship and cultural heritage, I began to explore this art more seriously.

I interviewed one of Taiwan’s most renowned puppet carving masters, and through the close connection between budai xi and temple culture, I also met with local temple leaders, gaining a deeper understanding of religious and cultural traditions. Eventually, I had the opportunity to learn directly from the master and began my own journey in puppet carving.

However, this brief overview cannot fully define who I am. I firmly believe that human potential is limitless. Looking ahead, I will continue to pursue my passions and strive to preserve and promote meaningful traditional culture for future generations.

Event executor

In various on- and off-campus activities, I have consistently taken on both planning and execution roles. My involvement has spanned psychological counseling outreach programs, campus exhibitions, career exploration fairs, and academically oriented research projects. From the initial stages of topic ideation and goal setting, I actively contributed to shaping the overall direction, and further took responsibility for designing event workflows, scheduling, task allocation, and on-site coordination.

During implementation, I often needed to adapt quickly under constraints such as limited resources, insufficient manpower, or unexpected changes. These experiences gradually strengthened my analytical thinking and operational flexibility. By participating in every stage—from concept development to final presentation—I learned how to integrate diverse perspectives within a team and transform abstract ideas into practical, executable plans.

Community action participant

I am deeply committed to social care and public welfare initiatives, actively responding to real-world social needs by participating in charity bazaars, fundraising drives, volunteer services, and collaborating with non-profit organizations.

In charity secondhand bazaars, I was responsible for item valuation, classification, and financial accounting, which allowed me to understand the structured management and operational models required behind public welfare activities. Through fundraising and advocacy campaigns, I learned how to effectively communicate the significance of social issues to the public and translate abstract care into concrete actions.

These experiences have made me realize that social problems are often structurally complex; only by combining long-term commitment, systemic understanding, and empathy can we create a true impact. This has also shaped my strong dedication to public affairs and social responsibility.

Outdoor Challenge Team Leader

In multiple long-distance, high-intensity outdoor challenge activities, I served as a team leader, guiding my team to successfully complete a 50-kilometer desert trek and a cycling journey of over 1,000 kilometers across Hainan Island. These activities not only demanded immense physical endurance but also relied heavily on meticulous pre-trip planning, thorough risk assessment, and strong team collaboration.

Throughout the expeditions, I continuously monitored the physical and mental well-being of team members, dynamically adjusted our itinerary and pacing, and made calm, critical judgments under high-pressure situations. Through these experiences, I deeply realized that leadership is not a one-way command, but a process of building trust, taking responsibility, and maintaining team cohesion in the face of adversity. This has also cultivated a high level of stress resistance and self-management ability within me.

Cultural Observation & Field Interviewer

Through field research and interpersonal interviews, I conducted in-depth explorations of Taiwan’s local culture and the development of folk industries, including night market economies, traditional artisans, and cultural practices in daily life.

Throughout my fieldwork, I proactively engaged with interviewees from diverse generations and backgrounds. Through open-ended questioning and prolonged observation, I gradually gained an understanding of how culture is preserved, transformed, or challenged within modern society. These firsthand experiences have taught me to approach cultural issues from both a macroscopic and nuanced perspective. They have also trained me to synthesize fragmented observations into systematic narratives and analyses, fostering deep cultural sensitivity and critical thinking skills.
